Spyware

A type of malware that attaches itself to and hides in a computer’s operating system so as to spy on your online activity. The primary purpose of doing this is often to generate unsolicited advertisements (adware) or make your web browser display certain websites or search results (web tracking and system monitors).

Spyware (keyloggers, rootkits, web beacons) can also be used to gather data from computer systems (such as passwords, credit card numbers, addresses, bank details) and forward it to a third-party without your knowledge or consent.
